Fairfield Lodge hits 125%
The
Provincial Grand Master, RWBro Graham Rudd
DL, made a formal visit to Fairfield
Lodge № 2224 on 7th December, to congratulate the Lodge for achieving 125% of
its target for the Derbyshire Festival 2014.
In recognition of this
outstanding feat, and in a complete surprise to members of the Lodge, the
Provincial Grand Master presented the Worshipful Master of Fairfield Lodge, Bro
Alec Parker, with a commemorative Level and Plumb Rule, made from the same wood
as his Festival Maul. In his address to the brethren present he said,
“It has been clear for some time that some
Lodges will go beyond what we have asked of them and donate significantly more
than their targets. It seems appropriate to me that their endeavours should be
recognised and rewarded by an additional symbol. Therefore, I am very pleased to
introduce my Festival Level and Plumb Rule and to present the first to Fairfield
Lodge. All Lodges that achieve 125% of their target will receive similar Levels
and Plumb Rules and I will make the presentations personally.”
The Provincial Grand Master
went on to pay tribute to the members of Fairfield Lodge for their creativity
and dedication. The Lodge has raised the money in a variety of ways and the
Lodge Festival Steward, WBro Philip Bowler, has been particularly proactive in
encouraging all members to do what they can to support the Festival. He
explained,
"We make sure that every member of the Lodge,
including new members as they join, receives a personal letter explaining the
purpose of the Festival and asking them to make a regular gift aided donation
direct to the MSF. We then follow that up with a face-to-face discussion and a
request that they complete the gift-aid form. I personally see new initiates on
their first evening. In Lodge meetings we have reminded the brethren of their
commitment, sometimes expressed at their interview, to give to charity. I'm
pleased and proud to say that most members of Fairfield Lodge now give under
this scheme. But in addition, we have also held a number of events that have
boosted our fund-raising, including a sponsored diet and sponsored walks. Next
year Bro Thang Yung will be running in the Nottingham Marathon for the Festival.
Different people give in different ways - but they have all given in some way."
The
Provincial Grand Master did emphasise that Lodge targets will remain as
originally set in April 2008 and that Lodges are not being asked to give more
than those targets. Nevertheless, with membership of the Province now lower than
in 2008 when the targets were set, and with four Lodges having since closed, he
is grateful to any Lodge that can go beyond what has been asked of them and
donate more.
The Festival Total for the
Province as a whole currently stands at £1,456,446. All Lodges have been asked
recently to provide an estimate of how much they expect to raise, so that the
Festival Executive can develop appropriate and proportional plans for achieving
the goal of raising £2,000,000 by September 2014. |

The Festival
'Fone' Fund
Bro
Matt Hewitson of Lutudarum Lodge has come up with a great scheme for
raising money for Derbyshire Festival 2014. The Festival ‘Fone’ Fund won’t cost
you a penny! Instead of digging deep in your pockets for change he is asking you
to dig deep in the back of your drawers to find that old Mobile Phone that has
been languishing there for the past few years.

A singing Lewis?
An
Initiate and a Maul presentation? What a start to a masonic career! It all
happened at Dore (2/7/11) |
Derbyshire Masons hit the heights
On Friday 3rd June, after
considerable organising and limited training in the Peak District, two
mini-buses filled with 18 Derbyshire Masons and their equipment headed 400 miles
North to Fort William in Scotland in preparation for the Derbyshire version of
the Three Peaks Challenge.
The
following morning at 4.30 the Challenge began at the foot of Ben Nevis and
although fitness and age soon determined an individual’s speed, we all made it
back down by mid-morning to a welcome ‘boil in the bag’ meal and then straight
into the mini-buses and heading to the Lake District.
Arriving at
Wasdale in the ‘back of beyond’ in the late afternoon we immediately started our
ascent up Scafell Pike, with the last of us returning to the bottom in darkness
– its small, but a brute!! No one remembers falling asleep that night at the
hostel, it just happened.
Another
early start on Sunday and the end was in sight, after all Mount Snowden in Wales
was the easiest, so we had been told! The determination of all the walkers was
100% and unbroken, we made it to the summit in bright sunshine and then
descended at speed into Llanberis to a strategically placed ale house at the end
of the mountain track for a celebratory drink.
The weekend
was a tremendous success as the experience and camaraderie for all those that
took part was incredible, it raised awareness of Freemasonary in Derbyshire and
has also proved to be the most successful fund raising event in the Province’s
history.
We can now
all look forward to next year’s ‘Coast to Coast’ bike ride.
